Wellington is New Zealand's capital with a population of 330,000 people. Most of the city lies on steep hills overlooking harbour.

The Maori first settled the Wellington region around 925AD. New Zealand's first European visitors - Abel Tasman (1642) and James Cook (1773) - weren't able to land due to storms. A few whalers visited the harbour, but it was not until 1840 that the first European settlers arrived. Because of it's sheltered harbour and central location within New Zealand, Wellington became the capital in 1865.

Wellington is New Zealand's cultural as well as political capital with fine architecture (both modern and historical), bustling nightlife and entertainment. Although Aucklanders will argue the relative merits of their city!
